Davidson County Release Meaning
A release from Davidson County custody means the Davidson County Jail no longer holds the person under that booking. It does not always mean the person walked into the community. The jail may release someone on bond, after time served, because of a court action, or to another custodian. A transfer to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction, another county, or ICE ends the local booking while custody continues elsewhere. Escape and death can also remove a name from an active list without an ordinary community release.
The official sheriff page is labeled the Active Inmate List. It reports people shown as active when the query is made. A name that is not shown is a lead, not a historical release record. Spelling differences, an alias, a transfer, a correction, or publication lag can produce the same result. Confirm the event through the jail custody entry and one other fitting source, such as a filed court order, NC SAVAN/VINELink event, or the receiving agency.
Davidson County Release Types
Release codes describe different legal and custodial events. They should not be treated as synonyms. Bond and a written promise are forms of conditional pretrial release, so the criminal case usually remains open. A dismissal or acquittal may support release, but only if no other case or hold keeps the person in custody. Time served and sentence expiration depend on the custodian's credit calculation. The sheriff timestamp shows when the local custody event was carried out.
| Release type | What it means | Best next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond, unsecured release, or written promise | Conditional release before the case is finished | Magistrate or judge's conditions plus sheriff release time |
| Time served or expiration | Custody ended under the jail's sentence and credit calculation | Judgment and sheriff custody release entry |
| Dismissal or acquittal | A case ended, subject to any other hold | Filed disposition plus sheriff release entry |
| Probation | Court-ordered supervision, sometimes without prison | Court judgment and NCDAC supervision status |
| Parole or post-release supervision | Release from state prison with correctional control continuing | NCDAC inmate and supervision status fields |
| Transfer or detainer | One custodian released the person to another | Destination field and receiving-agency locator |
Use the exact wording on the source record. “Inactive,” “released,” “discharged,” and “terminated” can describe different parts of an NCDAC case. A state prison release may start mandatory post-release supervision rather than end the full sentence. Likewise, release by the Davidson County Jail into immigration custody proves only that county custody ended.
Note: A transfer is a custody change, not proof that the person entered the community.
Davidson County Release Record Fields
No single document answers every release question. The Davidson County Sheriff's jail-management entry can connect a booking with an admission and release event. A court file explains the legal authority. NCDAC maintains the state sentence, admission, movement, release, and supervision history for people in its system. SAVAN provides custody-change notice data. A precise request should name the existing fields needed rather than ask the county to create a broad report.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Booking number | Connects the request to one local custody episode |
| Admission date and time | When the recorded jail stay began |
| Release date and time | When the jail recorded the end of that custody episode |
| Release code or reason | Bond, time served, transfer, or another recorded basis |
| Releasing authority | The court, sentence calculation, or other authority tied to departure |
| Bond type and amount | Public bond details associated with conditional release, if recorded |
| Destination agency | Whether another custodian received the person |
| Property disposition | How the jail recorded property handling, when that field exists |
The public web roster's visibility is separate from internal record retention. Removal from the active list does not show that the jail-management entry, court file, incident material, or fiscal record was deleted. Davidson County has not published one verified retention period for every release entry or photograph. Ask whether the requested record still exists and, if not, which retention schedule or disposition authority governed it.
Davidson County Bond Release Proof
Davidson County criminal magistrates set initial conditions of release in many cases. The official court contact directory lists criminal magistrates at 336-242-6717. A secured bond, unsecured bond, or written promise states the terms under which release is authorized. It does not prove the precise time the person left the detention center. Another open case, warrant, or detainer may still prevent departure.
Use the case number to obtain the filed release condition or bond order from the clerk or magistrate channel. Then match it to the sheriff's release date, time, and code. If the records differ, ask whether another authority or destination was recorded. That two-record check prevents a court authorization from being mistaken for an executed Davidson County release.
Request Davidson County Release Records
Davidson County accepts public-record requests by telephone, email, or through the county website. The ordinary generic contact form is not the records-request channel. Start from the county Government page and its “Make a Public Records Request” link. Include the request date, contact details, names, and a date-bounded description. The county may ask for clarification and generally sends readily retrievable electronic records by email, sometimes in batches or a private download link.
- Identify the booking. Give the full name, date of birth, booking number if known, and an approximate admission date.
- Name the existing fields. Ask for the booking sheet, admission and release time, release code, releasing authority, destination agency, and booking photograph if it exists.
- Define the date range. Ask separately whether an existing release log covers the dates. The county need not create a new 24-hour or 72-hour compilation.
- Set cost limits. Ask for notice before work that could carry a special service charge and request the statutory basis for any withheld part.
- Verify the response. Compare the custody release entry with the court order, SAVAN event, or receiving custodian.
No fixed Davidson jail release-record fee or completion deadline was verified. Readily retrievable electronic records are often emailed without charge, but extensive information-technology or clerical work may support a special service charge under G.S. 132-6.2(b). Requests are handled in received order as promptly as reasonably possible, with time affected by volume, review, resources, and complexity. A request is not continuing, so later-created records require a new request.

Davidson County Release Record Law
North Carolina Chapter 132 broadly defines public records and governs inspection, copies, formats, and costs. G.S. 132-6.2(e) also says an agency need not create a record or compile information that does not already exist. That point matters because Davidson County did not publish a verified 24-hour or 72-hour release feed as of the research date.
Access still depends on the record category. G.S. 132-1.4 treats criminal investigation and intelligence records as nonpublic as a class while making listed arrest facts public. Juvenile, sealed, confidential, and expunged material may be withheld or absent. An expunction can remove qualifying material from public-facing agency records, while restricted court records may remain for limited purposes. A missing online entry therefore does not prove that no booking ever occurred.
Corrections belong with the agency that owns the disputed field. Send a jail release issue to the sheriff, a filed court-order issue to the clerk, and a state sentence or status issue to NCDAC. Include the stable identifier, the exact field in dispute, and a supporting order when one exists.
Davidson County Release Volume Context
A 2018 Davidson County assessment reported about 6,000 jail bookings per year and an average daily population above 280. These are dated workload measures. They are not counts of unique people, confirmed releases, or present-day jail population. One person can have more than one booking, and transfer or another noncommunity event can close a local booking.
The scale explains why exact booking identifiers and dates matter. It does not support a claim about how many Davidson County inmates were released in any current day, month, or year. For that claim, request the relevant existing release data and preserve its scope.
Search Davidson County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custodian, not the person's home address or conviction county. The sheriff's active list is the correct first check for a recent Davidson County Jail booking. NCDAC is the correct system for a state prison sentence, including release from Davidson Correctional Center. BOP, ICE, and the federal docket answer separate federal or immigration questions. A no-result in any one locator does not prove release.
- Define the claim. Decide whether the question is “not on the roster,” “released on a date,” “transferred,” or “finished supervision.”
- Identify the custodian. Use a booking number, seven-digit NCDAC offender number, federal register number, or A-number when available.
- Check current status. Search the custodian's official system and record the access time. Use spelling variants only to find candidates.
- Find the event record. Obtain the sheriff release entry, NCDAC sentence history, SAVAN event, BOP result, or receiving-agency status.
- Read the legal authority. Check the filed bond condition, disposition, judgment, or release order without treating it as the physical departure time.
- Check continuing control. Look for probation, parole, post-release supervision, supervised release, a transfer, or a detainer.
- Resolve conflicts. Favor the filed order and current custodian records over old screenshots, snippets, or name-only matches.
For a county-jail-only release, NCDAC often adds nothing unless the person also entered state prison or state Community Supervision. For a transfer from the jail to NCDAC, the sheriff destination and state admission/current location should align. For a Davidson Correctional Center release, use NCDAC Offender Public Information and the dedicated state Inmate Release Search. The Davidson sheriff roster is the wrong source for that state event.
NCDAC Davidson Prison Release Search
The NCDAC Offender Public Information search covers people who are or were in the North Carolina state correctional system, including probation, parole, and post-release supervision records. It is not a county jail booking search. Match the offender number and descriptors before relying on a status. Then read inmate status, community-supervision status, sentence history, current or prior location, and Last Movement together.
| Search field | How to use it | Release value |
|---|---|---|
| Status filter | Choose All, Active Inmate, Active Probationer-Parolee, or Inactive | Separates current custody from historical or supervision records |
| Name | Enter last, first, and middle initial; try sounds-like surname | Finds candidates but does not prove identity |
| Offender number | Use the seven-digit NCDAC identifier | Best stable match across state records |
| Birth and age | Use exact birth date, offered plus-or-minus ranges, or age range | Helps separate people with similar names |
| Descriptors | Refine by gender, race, or ethnic group | Supports identity comparison |
| Sentence history | Read actual and projected dates with status and movement | Distinguishes forecast, transfer, and completed release |
The separate NCDAC Inmate Release Search accepts county with year and month, or a name. “Davidson” is a state release-data field, not a query of the sheriff jail. Its results can show offender number, name, release date, primary offense qualifier, and type of release. A county-only search may miss records assigned to “Release County Not Reported” or “Released To Other State(s),” so search the offender profile as a second route.
The official NCDAC release search shows how state releases are queried.
Read each result as an NCDAC prison release and verify the matching profile, rather than treating it as a Davidson County Jail release list.
Note: A projected release date is a forecast; an actual release date plus current status and movement documents the completed state event.
Davidson County Court Release Proof
Davidson County has the Lexington courthouse and a Thomasville branch, and its cases are in the statewide eCourts environment. The eCourts Portal can show public case events and dispositions. A calendar only shows a planned proceeding. A disposition may show the outcome without a release time, while a judgment can state a sentence without the jail's final credit calculation.
For durable proof, use a case number to request the filed bond condition, release order, judgment, disposition, commitment, or later modification from the Clerk of Superior Court. Public terminals can search criminal case information by defendant name or case number. Paper files come from the county of filing, subject to confidentiality and copy charges. The sheriff custody entry supplies the executed departure time, while the court document supplies authority.
The North Carolina Judicial Branch explains public-terminal and paper-file access.
This court route remains useful after a short jail appearance disappears from the active roster, but it must still be paired with the actual custodian's release data.
Davidson County Post-Release Supervision
NCDAC displays “Inmate Status” separately from “Probation/Parole/Post Release Status.” Preserve both fields. An inactive inmate status with active supervision supports that prison custody ended while correctional control continues. If both are inactive, NCDAC reports neither current prison custody nor current community supervision, subject to identity checks and system updates.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision that may occur without a state prison term.
- Parole
- Discretionary early prison release mainly tied to eligible older-law sentences.
- Post-release supervision
- Mandatory community supervision after a current structured-sentencing felony prison term.
- Discharge
- The end of the correctional status identified by the reporting system, not a broad statement about every agency.
- Absconder
- A person NCDAC reports missing from required supervision contact, not automatic proof of jail custody or a new conviction.
Davidson County is served by Community Supervision District 22 at 507-C West Center Street in Lexington, 336-249-9332. Search OPI first. If the public status is unclear, provide the offender number and ask which official office serves the case and whether the displayed public status is current. Detailed supervision notes are generally confidential.
Davidson County Release Alerts
North Carolina SAVAN, delivered through VINE/VINELink, is a free automated custody and court-status notification service. For a Davidson record, select North Carolina, search by name or booking/offender number, and open the match whose agency and identifiers fit. Read the exact reporting agency and status. Registration may offer phone, text, or email. Telephone registration uses a four-digit PIN to acknowledge a notice.
SAVAN distinguishes projected release, actual release with supervision, actual release without supervision, transfer, escape or capture, death, and other custody events. A forecast notice is not an actual release notice. A transfer notice does not mean community freedom. If no record appears, call the 24/7 SAVAN line at 1-877-627-2826 or the jail because timeliness and completeness are not guaranteed.
The NC SBI Sex Offender Registry has separate neighborhood-move alerts for covered registrants. Those alerts are not a general release search and do not supply a universal release date. Registry presence also does not prove that all custody or supervision ended.
Note: Never publish a SAVAN PIN or notification destination; use the custody record for final confirmation.
Federal and Immigration Release Checks
No operating federal prison or dedicated ICE detention facility was found in Davidson County. Federal and immigration custody can still follow a local arrest. The BOP inmate locator covers federal BOP records from 1982 forward. It accepts federal identifiers or name and refiners. “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” means BOP no longer reports custody, but another agency or federal supervision may still apply.
The ICE Online Detainee Locator searches by A-number and country of birth or by biographical details. It is a live locator, not a historical archive. When the Davidson County Jail records release to ICE, confirm the county time and destination first, then use ICE contacts. A no-result can reflect spelling, transfer, processing delay, age rules, or lack of ICE custody.
Federal pretrial detainees may be held for the U.S. Marshals Service in state, local, or contract facilities. Davidson County lies in the Middle District of North Carolina. Because USMS has no matching historical public release locator, verify pretrial release through the federal docket, filed order, and district office. A BOP no-result does not answer a USMS custody question.
Davidson County Release Custody Routes
The correct source follows the facility and event. Davidson County Jail is a sheriff-operated local jail holding pretrial detainees, qualifying local sentences, and people awaiting transfer. Davidson Correctional Center is an NCDAC minimum-custody state prison for adult men. Even though both facilities are in Lexington, their release records do not merge.
- Active Davidson County Jail booking
- Use the sheriff Active Inmate List, then call the jail if status is time-sensitive.
- Closed Davidson County Jail booking
- Use the sheriff custody release entry, SAVAN event, and filed court order.
- Davidson Correctional Center release
- Use NCDAC Offender Public Information, the Inmate Release Search, and supervision status.
- Federal or immigration custody
- Use BOP, ICE, or the federal docket and USMS route that matches the custodian.
Davidson County Jail / Davidson County Detention Center: facility release details cover bond, time served, court action, and transfer from the local jail. Davidson Correctional Center: state prison release details explain NCDAC status, movement, release history, and reentry. These are the only two operating facilities in the research Facility Map.
Davidson Detention Planning Is Not Release
Davidson County records trace detention-center planning from a 2021 request for planning, design, and construction-phase services through an FY2025 expansion discussion. An FY2027 proposed budget later described staffing for a new detention center projected to open in FY2029. These are planning and proposed-budget facts. They do not establish that a replacement jail is open or that the custody lookup has moved.
Continue to use the current official sheriff and county channels until Davidson County publishes an operating change. A proposed opening year is not an inmate's projected release date, nor does a construction plan alter the proof needed for an individual release.
Davidson State Release Pathways
Davidson Correctional Center is a designated NCDAC reentry prison. A 2024 NCDAC announcement described roughly 250 men there in the final stages of incarceration and due for release, with some work release. Its listed capacity is 258. Those figures describe a state institution and its reentry role, not current Davidson County Jail releases.
Lexington also hosts North Piedmont Confinement in Response to Violation Center. CRV is an NCDAC Community Supervision response for qualifying technical violations. Completion of that confinement ordinarily returns the person to the state supervision case, so it does not necessarily terminate supervision. Use OPI and the supervising office, not the county active roster.
For a Davidson Correctional Center record, inspect inmate status, separate supervision status, Last Movement, actual release date, and sentence history. A move to another prison is still state custody. Only the state record can distinguish that movement from a completed NCDAC prison release.
